Corpus Christi International Competition Rules

Entry Deadline for February 2009 Competition: postmark Saturday, November 15, 2008

The Competition

  1. Each contestant will submit a high-quality CD or cassette recording of one movement of the concerto and one solo piece. On the basis of these preliminary recordings, the contest will be limited to 40 performers.
  2. Those accepted will perform for the judges and an audience in the first round. Six semi-finalists will be chosen from the String Division and six from the Piano Division to compete in the Second Round.
  3. Two String players and two Pianists will advance to compete at the Finals on Sunday afternoon for the Young Artist Awards.
  4. All prizes are awarded at the discretion of the judges, whose decisions are final.

Eligibility

The Competition is open to any student of piano, violin, viola, cello, double bass or harp who will not have reached her/his 26th birthday by February 15, 2009.

Students of the current judges and previous winners of the Young Artist awards are ineligible.

Repertoire

Strings

  • Playing time in the first round may be limited to 20 minutes at the discretion of the judges.
  • First Round: First or final movement of a standard concerto or a single-movement work, and an unaccompanied work from a different historical period.
  • Second Round: Another movement of the concerto
  • Finals: Entire concerto

Piano

  • Playing time 25 minutes solo, 15 minutes concerto
  • Total repertoire shall be a complete Concerto and a 25 minute solo program which includes at least one movement of a Sonata by Clementi, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, or Schubert; a virtuoso Etude, and other solo(s) of the contestant’s choice
  • First round: One movement of a Concerto and the 25” solo program.
  • Second round: Another movement of the Concerto.
  • Finals: Complete concerto or single-movement work

  • Edna Ocker Memorial Accompanist Award: $300
  • Howard Beebe String Award for Best Solo Bach Performance: $300
  • Wayne Crouse Memorial Award for Best Viola Performance: $300
  • Luigi Silva Memorial Award for Best Cello Performance: $300
  • Jean ten Have Memorial Award for Best Performance of a Paganini Caprice or a Movement from an Ysaÿe Sonata, Opus 27: $300
  • Leo Sirota Memorial Award for Best Solo Piano Performance: $600

Divisional Awards

Divisional Awards are provided by the Morris L. Lichtenstein, Jr. Medical Research Foundation and Corpus Christi International Competition Donors.

  • Semi-finalist awards, each division: $500
  • Third Place, each Division: $1,000
  • Second Place, each Division: $2,500

Young Artist Awards

  • Morris L. Lichtenstein, Jr. Medical Research Foundation String Award: $5,000
  • Mary Hope Brennecke Memorial Piano Award, $5000

Additional Information

  • Please adhere to the Schedule for Competition deadlines. Deadline for entry is firm. Entries must be postmarked by Saturday, November 15, 2008 for 2009 Competition.
  • The Competition has special arrangements with the Omni Bayfront[361-880-6738]. Reservations must be made directly with the hotel to obtain the Competition rate.
